The Coronary Calcium Score is a non-invasive, quick and painless diagnostic test that quantifies the presence of calcium in the heart arteries. It is performed using a non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan and interpreted by a cardiologist.
This score reflects the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis, a disease that increases the risk of myocardial infarction, angina and heart failure. Therefore, the calcium score is a key tool for cardiovascular risk stratification in asymptomatic patients with cardiovascular risk factors.

The coronary calcium score is used to detect the presence of calcium plaques in the heart arteries, which indicates subclinical coronary artery disease (that has not yet caused symptoms). It is a key tool for assessing the risk of heart attack or cardiovascular events in people with risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking or a family history of heart disease.
By identifying risk at an early stage, it allows preventive decisions to be made, such as lifestyle changes or medical treatment.
The coronary calcium score is performed using a non-contrast multislice computed tomography (CT) scan, which obtains detailed images of the heart in seconds.
During the study, the patient lies on a table that slides into the scanner, where they will be asked to hold their breath for a few seconds while the images are acquired.
It is a quick, non-invasive and painless procedure that usually takes between 5 and 10 minutes. Afterwards, a radiologist calculates the calcium “score” based on the amount of calcium detected in the coronary arteries.
No. The study is completely painless and non-invasive. No needles or contrast agents are used.
The patient remains lying down for a few minutes while the images are acquired. Most people describe it as a very comfortable procedure.
Atherosclerosis is a disease in which cholesterol, calcium and other substances accumulate in the wall of the coronary arteries. Over time, this plaque may cause:
Early detection of this condition is essential to prevent serious events and improve the patient’s prognosis.
