The pulmonology clinic at Ascires is intended for anyone experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath or cough, especially when these become chronic, as in cases of asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or pulmonary fibrosis. Our pulmonologists assess chronic and persistent respiratory symptoms in order to establish an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Other common reasons for pulmonology consultations include symptoms related to colds, bronchitis, pneumonia or other infectious conditions.
In pulmonology, we also provide follow-up for smoking habits in current smokers. This allows us to regularly assess the smoker’s health status, supporting the prevention and early detection of lung diseases.
If you have high blood pressure, in addition to your regular cardiology visits, we also recommend consulting a pulmonologist.
We also have a dedicated sleep unit. Therefore, if you snore heavily, feel poorly rested in your day-to-day life or experience significant fatigue, we recommend seeing a pulmonologist. At Ascires, we carry out detailed sleep studies for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of sleep apnoea.
If you are a smoker, or have been a smoker for many years, you should consult a pulmonologist for regular assessment of your health status.
If you wish to quit smoking, you can take advantage of our smoking cessation programmes.
If you are a smoker or former smoker aged over 50; a former smoker who quit less than 15 years ago; and you have had or currently have a cumulative consumption of more than 20 pack-years, we recommend enrolling in our lung cancer early detection programme, available at Ascires.
In addition, we have a reference pulmonology unit in Valencia, specialised in the prevention, diagnosis and follow-up of respiratory diseases.
The signs and symptoms that may appear in cases of lung cancer include: a new cough that persists, coughing up blood, chest pain that worsens when breathing or coughing, snoring, a feeling of breathlessness or difficulty breathing, wheezing when breathing, and unexplained weight loss.
At more advanced stages, symptoms may include bone pain, headaches, swelling of the face and neck, and loss of appetite.
If you notice any of these signs, we recommend attending a pulmonology consultation. The pulmonologist will assess your symptoms and, based on their clinical judgement, request the necessary tests to establish a diagnosis.
To detect lung cancer, at Ascires we use high-definition, ultra low-dose spectral computed tomography (CT). This enables us to identify tumours at early stages—something that cannot be achieved with a standard X-ray—while minimising radiation exposure for the patient.
By performing this high-definition, ultra low-dose CT scan, we also gain the additional benefit of being able to detect other conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, interstitial lung disease and bone disorders, among others.
Other additional tests performed at Ascires include lung tissue biopsies, bronchoscopies and sputum analysis. In certain cases, we may also carry out a PET-CT scan (positron emission computed tomography), which allows us to assess the extent of the disease.
The Ascires Sleep Unit is recommended for individuals who experience symptoms such as snoring, poor sleep quality at night and accumulated fatigue, and who therefore may be suspected of having sleep apnoea.
Risk factors include being over 50 years of age, obesity, hypertension and hyperglycaemia.
Ascires has the ENS certification with the MEDIA category for its medical centers in the Valencian Community and Madrid.
